In 1998 EWL Electric acquired the electrical wholesaling business of GEC Ireland Ltd and the GEC locations took on the trading name of Edmundson Electrical. In 2005 Irwin Electrical of Letterkenny, County Donegal was acquired.
In August 2008 the development of EWL continued with the major acquisition of Eastern Electrical Limited.
The connection between Edmundson and Ireland can be traced back to the early 1800's when Joshua Edmundson began trading in Dublin. Joshua's brother in law, John Wigham, was an inventor who developed gas lighting in Dublin, including the lighting used in Ireland's principal lighthouses. The Irish Times dated March 1879 gives John Wigham the credit for the "two (gas) lamps lately erected in front of the Alliance Gas Office in Grafton Street."
From these humble beginnings, through to being one of the first suppliers of electricity, the Edmundson name is proudly associated with the premier electrical wholesale distributors supplying quality branded products to trade and industry throughout Ireland and the UK.
